Special Event: Q&A with LadiesFirst Racing
6:30pm Thursday July 8th Landry’s Westboro
Q&A and conversation with the team. All women cyclists welcome.
Do you have questions related to training, maintenance, nutrition, or racing? Tire pressure, clipping in, how to shift, what to eat? If you are a complete beginner or a dedicated racer, a triathlete, or a casual cyclist, join us for an evening of bike chat.
Since I’ll be out of town we won’t be having a mellow ride this week. See you July 1 for a pre-Fitchburg spin!
Waiting in Boston Logan for my flight to Minneapolis for a week of racing at NVGP, as part of the Nature Valley Pro Ride Team. Looking forward to meeting my fellow teammates, making sure my Tarmac made it to Penn Cycles in one piece, and getting some rest at my host family’s place before the race kicks off with the St. Paul Time Trial and Crit tomorrow.
Big thanks to Nature Valley for their generosity and Michael Engleman, Matt Anderson, and the rest of the folks making this dream a reality!

Race Report by Christina Tamilio
With only one crit under my belt, I was happy find that the roads were dry and the skies looked clear at the starting line. I figured this would make for a much safer race! Our pack of 25 or so started the 20 mile, 32 lap race at a brisk pace. The course was an interesting collection of right and left turns, some sharper than others, leading back to a slightly uphill finish. I quickly learned the tactics of how to take the corners and when to shift and realized that I had a lot to learn as far as crit strategy! I spent the first half of the race playing catch up out of my saddle after each corner and wasting too much energy on the left side of the pack, where the headwind was strongest. I finally found the sweet spot and learned where I could move up in the pack with about 15 to go. Without dropping names, there were certainly a few incidents that spiked my heart rate, but I managed to stay in the clear and keep the rubber side down! Phew! The race was fairly uneventful in that there were no breaks given the nature of the course, but the field rode aggressively, fighting for key positions. With two laps to go, I worked my way into a strong position that was sure to take me into a winning sprint! It was clear that the sprint would be all about who made it through the last corner first. With two turns to go before the sprint finish, I was surprised by a few women who tactically moved ahead, positioning themselves ahead of me into the last turn. Before I knew it, the last corner was in front of me and I was too far back! I felt strong sprinting the last 250 meters to the finish and took a few women on my way, landing in 9th place. All in all, it was a good race and a great learning experience!
Race Report by Anna Barensfeld
I finished 28th of 80 finishers (120 starters) at Sunday’s Liberty Classic in Philly, guest-riding for Specialized D4W p/b Bicyclehaus. This was by far the biggest road race I’ve started, and is in fact the biggest single-day race in the U.S. The whole atmosphere was incredible. All the big teams were there: Peanut Butter & Co, Columbia-HTC, Webcor, VBF, Colavita, TIBCO. For the men, JellyBelly, Fuji-Servetto, Garmin, BMC, Bissell, Fly-V, etc.
I just missed the decisive split of the day the fourth and final time up the Manayunk wall and ended up sprinting for 6th out of the 28 riders in our 2nd group, 1:25 behind the 22 in the first group of finishers.
Highlights: racing next to Jeannie Luongo, then meeting her in the elevator and asking her how her legs fared in the sprint (!); the agony & the ecstacy of the Manayunk wall x4; six Garmin-Transitions Felts lined up by race number next to the hotel breakfast; signing in behind Evelyn Stevens and noticing how HTC’s uniforms are personalized under the collar (hey Dani…); Euro racer mullets and Italian shoes in the race hotel; seeing some familiar New England faces in the pack mix it up with some international competition.
LadiesFirst Mellow Ride is on for tomorrow!
Thursday 6pm, Landry’s Westboro. Easy pace, nobody gets dropped, approximately 1 hour. All are welcome.
This is a great opportunity to ask questions about racing if you have never tried it!
